Canyoning in Uzbekistan: A Grand Adventure in the West Tien Shan

Do you dream of a real adventure that combines hiking, swimming, and exploring pristine wilderness? Canyoning in Uzbekistan is exactly what you are looking for. Just 100 kilometers from the bustling capital city of Tashkent, in the heart of the West Tien Shan mountains, lie stunning gorges carved by mountain rivers over millions of years. This is more than just a walk; it is an active journey that involves navigating natural obstacles: narrow gorges, waterfalls, and crystal-clear natural pools. We offer three unique routes that will provide you with unforgettable emotions and incredible photos to last a lifetime.

Why Choose the Canyons of Uzbekistan?

Canyon hiking (Canyon Hiking) in this region is unique due to the incredible diversity of landscapes. You will traverse trails that offer majestic panoramas of the Ugam, Pskem, and Koksu ranges surrounding the deep blue waters of the Charvak Reservoir. Nature itself has created ideal conditions for canyoneering (Canyoneering) here: a mild climate, easy accessibility of the routes, and their stunning beauty attract travelers from all over the world.

Route 1: The Classic — Gulkam Canyon

Difficulty: Moderate
This is the most popular hiking tour in the canyons of Uzbekistan, perfect for a first introduction.

  • Journey Start: Transfer from Tashkent (90 km, 1.5 hours) to the “Chimgan” recreation zone at the foot of the Chatkal Range (1,300 m).

  • The Trail: A steady ascent along a good path to the Pesochniy (Sandy) Pass (1,832 m). From here, the first breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains unfold.

  • The Heart of the Route: Descent into the gorge of the Gulkamsay River. After a rest in a shady birch grove, you enter the pearl of the hike — Gulkam Canyon. Here, the walls narrow to just 5 meters, forming a stone corridor. You will encounter numerous small waterfalls, natural rock pools (“bathtubs”), and tight gorges. This section involves frequent wading through the river and takes about one hour to traverse, offering a refreshing break from the heat.

  • Continuing On: After exiting the canyon, the route involves a climb up the Kuiluksay River to a scenic waterfall, followed by a descent back along the Gulkamsay River to the country road.

  • End of the Day: The drive back to Tashkent runs along the picturesque shores of the Charvak Reservoir, offering the best panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges from the road.

Route 2: Reach for the Top — Gulkam + Smaller Chimgan Peak

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (requires good stamina)
For those who want to conquer a peak after the cool waters of the canyon. This route adds a breathtaking bird’s-eye view to the experience of the first option.

  • First Part: Completely follows Route 1: traversing Gulkam Canyon with its water obstacles and resting in the birch grove.

  • The Ascent: Instead of descending back to the transport, you will climb back up to the Pesochniy Pass, and then continue the ascent to the summit of Smaller Chimgan Peak (2,100 m) . From here, an even more spectacular panorama of the Charvak Reservoir and the surrounding ranges unfolds.

  • Finish: Descent from the peak back to the Chimgan area and departure to Tashkent.

Route 3: Extreme Adventure — The Marble River

Uzbekistan Mountain Waterfalling

Difficulty: High (Requires good physical fitness and insurance)
Attention! This program is for true adventure seekers and is only conducted in dry weather using specialized safety equipment. This route is a real challenge.

  • The Approach: The journey begins past the Melovoy Pass towards the “Surpa” mountain complex. The trail then descends directly to the riverbed of the Marble River.

  • Jacuzzi Pools: You will hike upstream, passing incredibly beautiful marble bathtubs and jacuzzis carved naturally into the rock. On a hot day, it’s tempting to dive into these natural pools.

  • A Glimpse into the Past: Along the riverbanks, you can find numerous fossilized shells of prehistoric mollusks, perfectly preserved. You can literally touch the history of the Earth!

  • The Technical Section: The main extreme part begins where the river enters a narrow gorge. Descent into this canyon is only possible using climbing techniques. An experienced guide will organize a rope descent using a descender to the base of a powerful waterfall. During the warm season, you can refresh yourself under its streams. The ascent back out is done using a rope and an ascender device (jumars).

  • The Return: After finishing the program in the gorge, you can either return the same way (a steep climb out) or descend along the Marble River bed to the road leading to the Beldersay resort, where a vehicle can be waiting for you.

Gear and Safety

Uzbekistan Mountain Waterfalling

For all routes, sturdy trekking boots with good grip (you will encounter wet and slippery rocks), a change of clothes, and plenty of water are mandatory. For Route 3 (The Marble River) , the use of ropes and safety gear is compulsory.

Important Safety Warning: Mountain nature is beautiful but unforgiving. Remember that visiting canyons is not recommended after heavy rain due to the risk of mudflows (in 2006, a group of tourists tragically perished in Gulkam Canyon during such an event). Trust your guide’s judgment; they have the right to prevent any participant from attempting the extreme part of the route if they deem it unsafe. We strongly recommend having personal medical insurance.
