Head for the Hills: Discover Legendary Soviet Rock in Uzbekistan’s Yangiabad

Destination: Yangiabad, Uzbekistan
Season: April – November
Duration: 5-Day Climbing Program

Forget the crowded gyms at home. It’s time to pack your harness, rack your quickdraws, and head deep into the heart of Central Asia. Welcome to Yangiabad—a name whispered among Eastern Bloc alpinists for decades and a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered by the global climbing community.

If you are a purist who loves the grit of adventure, a sport climber looking for a project, or a boulderer seeking new lines on unique rock, this five-day program is your ticket to a climbing experience unlike any other.

The Vibe: Vintage Grit with Modern Potential

Located just a 160 km journey from the capital city of Tashkent, the Yangiabad massif has been luring climbers since the middle of the last century. This isn’t a sterile, over-developed crag. This is climbing with character. The rock formations here are enchanting, offering a variety of movements from delicate slabs to overhanging jug hauls.

With a stable and warm climate from April through November, Yangiabad provides a reliable window to get your fix. Whether you are looking to redpoint a tough sport line, set up a top rope for a chill day, or explore the mental game of traditional and aid climbing, the mountains here have something for you.

The Climbing: Two Distinct Gorges

We focus our attention on two main sectors, each with a distinct personality:

1. Pigeon Gorge (Golubinoe Ushchelie)
Accessibility is key here. Just an hour’s hike from our base camp puts you at the base of these historic walls. This is the heart of old-school Yangiabad. As you look up at the lines, you are tracing the history of Soviet climbing.

2. Warm Pools (Teplye Vanochki)
A short 20-minute drive from the base brings you to this area. The approach is easier, allowing you to save your energy for the rock.

Grades, Grit, and “Caveat Emptor”

The routes here span the spectrum from 6a (5.10a) to a stout 8c (5.14b) . However, we believe in honest beta, so here is the real talk about the conditions:

  • The Soviet Legacy: Many of the classic routes were bolted during the Soviet era. While the anchors are generally solid, they feature older designs. Expect runouts and old-school spacing. This is not your polished, bolt-every-two-feet European sport crag. Caution and a cool head are required.

  • The Glue-Hold Problem: In a unique twist of history, many of the original routes utilized glued-on holds. Over the decades, nature has reclaimed them. You might find a line of perfect bolts leading up a blank face—the holds are simply gone. This makes grading the classics nearly impossible by today’s standards; they are historic artifacts more than climbable lines.

  • The Modern Renaissance: Don’t let that discourage you. There is a fantastic selection of newer routes equipped with modern anchors and reliable, solid holds. The key to unlocking the best of Yangiabad is local knowledge.

This is why having a guide is non-negotiable for a successful trip. We know exactly which lines are “in.” We know which classic routes have cleaned up nicely and which modern testpieces are ready for your project. We’ll point you to the solid anchors and steer you clear of the choss.

Trekking to the Khan Tengri BC. Fixed departure dates

South Inylchek Glacier Expedition – Fixed Departure Dates 2026

Discover the Heart of the Tien Shan

Join us on an unforgettable trekking adventure to the Base Camp of Khan Tengri (7,010 m) — one of the most legendary peaks in the Tien Shan Mountains and one of the most beautiful pyramidal summits in the world.

This spectacular route follows the mighty South Inylchek Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in Central Asia. Along the way, you will witness the famous Merzbacher Lake, a rare high-altitude glacial lake that forms and drains every year, surrounded by dramatic ice walls and snow-covered summits.

The landscapes here are vast, wild, and untouched — a true expedition into one of the most remote mountain regions on Earth. Towering peaks, immense glaciers, alpine meadows, crystal-clear rivers, and nomadic culture combine to create an experience that is both powerful and deeply inspiring.

⚠ Important Note on Independent Trekking

This route passes through extremely remote glacial terrain, river crossings, moraine fields, and areas without mobile coverage or infrastructure.

Attempting this trek independently and without professional support is highly challenging and not recommended.
Logistics, food supply, permits, safety coordination, glacier navigation, and altitude adaptation require careful planning and experienced guidance.

Our fully organized expedition ensures:

  • Professional English-speaking mountain guides

  • Established permanent camps along the route

  • Porters and logistical support

  • Communication equipment for safety

  • Full board meals prepared by camp staff

  • Transport coordination and permits

With us, you focus on the adventure — we handle the complexity.

Khan Tengri Base Camp Trek

Important Information for Independent Trekkers

The route to Khan Tengri Base Camp via the South Inylchek Glacier is one of the most remote and logistically demanding trekking routes in Central Asia. While it may appear accessible on a map, in reality it involves glacier travel, river crossings, high-altitude camping, rapidly changing weather conditions, and areas without communication coverage.

⚠ We Do Not Support Autonomous / Self-Guided Trekking on This Route

Due to the complexity and objective risks of the terrain, we do not provide logistical support for independent trekkers attempting this route on their own.

This includes:

  • No standalone food drops

  • No partial transport-only arrangements

  • No porter-only services

  • No camp-only bookings

  • No emergency-only coverage

The South Inylchek region requires coordinated logistics, established camps, professional guides, communication systems, and strict safety protocols. Attempting the trek without structured support significantly increases risk and operational difficulty.

Why Independent Trekking Is Extremely Challenging Here

This is not a typical marked mountain trail. The route includes:

  • Travel along one of the largest glaciers in the Tien Shan

  • Moraine fields and unstable terrain

  • Glacial streams and river crossings

  • High-altitude exposure up to 3,800 m

  • No villages or infrastructure for many days

  • No mobile network coverage

  • Strict border and environmental control zones

Even experienced trekkers underestimate the logistical complexity of this expedition.
